Do you want fries with that?

There is bullshitting and then there is proper sales. Unfortunately, for most people, it’s the very same thing. Why do so many people hate sales? I think it’s because they are annoyed by people calling them at evening asking if they want to buy insurance. But guess what, even the innocent question “Do you want fries with that?” is a part of sales. This simple sales trick earns McDonalds millions of dollars each year.  Continue reading “Do you want fries with that?” »

Making Millions with Liberal Arts Degree?

What do Matt Mullenweg- the founder of WordPress, Facebook cofounder Dustin Moskovitz and founding president Sean Parker, fashion designer Mark Ecko all have in common? They are all successful, making millions of dollars and – they don’t have a college degree.

Whether you do have a college degree or not, you probably already know that they don’t teach you all the important things at school. When you graduate with 50 000 USD or more of debt with a degree in liberal arts with no job offer, you might realize 4 years and all the money spent on formal education was a bad investment. Peter Thiel, the cofounder of PayPal and now a venture capitalist, calls it a Higher Education Bubble. “A true bubble is when something is overvalued and intensely believed,” he says. “Education may be the only thing people still believe in in the United States. To question education is really dangerous. It is the absolute taboo. It’s like telling the world there’s no Santa Claus.”

How to get CEOs on the phone

Whether you are a startup or existing small business looking for new sales you need to get contacts. How do you get in touch with important people and more important – how do you get their attention? There are few tricks I use.

1) You need personal assistant

You actually don’t have to hire one. All you have to do is to appear to be important enough to have one. I used to call assistants of general directors and introduced myself with false name claiming I was personal assistant to Martina. To myself. Martina, the director. Whoa! I was actually oneman-show company, but they never knew. That way I got meetings with lot of important people, got some sales and after some time I had enough money to hire a real assistant.

Notes on “Hot, Flat & Crowded” Book by Thomas L. Friedman

I enjoyed Friedman’s previous book about Globalisation – The World is Flat which became international bestseller and as an eco-fan I had to read this one (I do admit I used to be  Greenpeace activist when I was 15 :-) . But what Friedman did was writing about the future!  Right, he did mention present with all the dirty little secrets of governments and corporations  ruining our planet and the past when the nature was yet untouched, but what I really enjoyed  was reading about the future. And what a bright future that was! Friedman’s knowledge of  technologies, imagination and optimism drew a picture of how we are going to survive and live  in few years in my head and I would like to share some parts of the book with you:

“The Stone Age didn’t end because we ran out of stones.”
